In this tutorial I will show you how to make these hot pads.

The hot pads are about 7.5 inches square. 

When you place hot baking dishes on the hot pads the oils in the botanicals are released and impart a subtle but delightful fragrance.

Filling used in this tutorial

16 ounces of hot pad filling used in this tutorial is enough for 2 hot-pads. The filling consists of a blend of the following botanicals:

• rosemary
• cellulose fiber
• allspice
• balsam fir
• coriander
• cloves
• cinnamon
• Also included is a cinnamon stick that can be used if wrapping for a gift.

They are filled with a delightful blend of rosemary, cellulose fiber, allspice, balsam fir, coriander, cloves and cinnamon.

For two hot pads you will need:  

• About 16 ounces of filling
• 4 pieces of fabric cut to 8 inches square
• Matching thread, and some string.

Pin right sides together. If using plaid fabric make sure that the pattern will line up after being sewn.

Set your machine to about 20 stitches per inch and sew around the hot pad leaving an opening of about 3 inches for filling the hot pads.

Turn the hot pad right side out and fill with about 8 ounces or 2-1/2 cups of filling.

I cut the bottom out of a drinking cup to use as a funnel to make filling easier.

Stitch up the opening.

Flatten out the hot pad and decide where to make the ties and how many you would like. The more ties you add the more firm your hot pad will be.

That’s all there is to it.

If you are going to give them as a gift you can wrap them with cellophane and tie with a ribbon topped with a cinnamon stick and other botanicals.
